Ipod Information - Post 9 - Apples and Worms
.

A quick word of caution ...

With video being hailed as the Holy Grail on the Web in 2006, don't get under the ether or the fad du jour and spend a bunch of money. Yet.

Like every wise purchasing decision, do your due diligence.

On or about 2/1/06 - I'll launch a brand new, very comprehensive information site on ipods (and other players) and online video. It is 100% full of brand new, precisely current news (less than 30 days old at the time of posting) ... and reviews on the "state of the union" where ipods and online video are concerned.

The URL is http://www.ipods_and_onlinevideo_reviews.com.

As of the date I write this post, it is not yet active. When you read this, it could be. Click the link and find out. You won't need any other site to give you the whole truth about this new technology. All the info you'll find on the site comes from industry experts - not private opinions ... so it's 100% unbiased.

If that makes sense to you, click the link and have a look. If not - take your chances ...

Chip Tarver's Ipod Information - Post 8 - Apple iPod vs. the World

.
Ipod Information - Post 8 - Apple iPod vs. the World
.
According to a recent article at http://www.consumersearch.com/www/electronics/mp3-players/fullstory.html ... if you buy an Apple iPod, the only music download store you can use is the Apple iTunes store.

Your iPod is NOT compatible with all of Apple's competitors' services because the iPod uses a proprietary file type only Apple provides and supports. Your iPod will NOT work with Apple's competitors.

While that might be a smart and protective step Apple took (or not) - is that the best long-term decision for you to make? It rings of the old video format "Beta vs. VHS" issues years ago.

You decide (wisely.)

Chip Tarver's Ipod Information - Post 5 - Apple's New Video Search Engine

.
Ipod Information - Post 5 - Apple's New Video Search Engine
.

According to PC Magazine - AOL has bought its own video search engine to beef up its video search services with the acquisition of Truveo.

This was posted Tuesday, January 10, 2006 ...

"As consumer demand for online video swells, America Online announced today that it has acquired Truveo, a provider of video search, to boost its capabilities in this area, considered one of the hottest segments of the search engine market.

Truveo, founded in January 2004 and based in Burlingame, California, has developed a "crawling" technology that, it claims, allows it to find and index Web video content that remains invisible to conventional Web spiders.

Truveo Technology

Truveo calls its technology Visual Crawler because the company says that it can detect video content by identifying visual characteristics similarly to how a human does.

Truveo’s approach also allows it to automatically compile and retrieve descriptive information about the videos it indexes. By capturing this metadata, such as a video clip's date, length, title, director, and producer, Truveo makes the content of its index easier to search, according to the company.

AOL’s plans to integrate Truveo's technology into its video search services in the coming months. Truveo's search engine is available for free.

AOL’s acquisition of the privately held startup closed in December. Financial details aren't being released."

Chip Tarver's Ipod Information - Post 3 - Google Video Store

.
Ipod Information - Post 3 - Google Video Store Coming
.

Google Video Store is about to challenge Apple's "Big Dog Position."

Google says its store will launch with 5,000 titles, and feels like its store will be the first major challenge to the initial lead Apple has grabbed in the newly emerging online video market ...

Google's business model for this store also creates a very cool business opportunity for anyone with a video camera. Unlike Apple’s ITunes Video Store, Google will let you decide how much to charge for your videos, (and there are no minimum or maximum prices.)

The store is not yet open, but you can get a peek at what's happenin' by checking out Google's press release at this url:
